What Makes a Good Reusable Nappy?

Reusable nappies continue to become more popular for various reasons. They help a family save money. They help the environment. They are easy to use. They are convenient. There are a lot of types of reusable nappies and nappy systems available, and it is not always clear what makes a good nappy. When shopping for a nappy, parents need to look at absorption, fit, waterproof quality, durability and convenience. While its cost-effectiveness is important, investing on a good nappy system is even more vital.

Leaks are one of the main concerns parents have when looking at reusable nappies. To avoid or prevent leaks, a good nappy should have a high degree of absorption. This can be achieved using a nappy system that can include nappy liners or inserts that can be doubled when needed. Using a nappy cover with prefolds or flats can also be a good system to avoid leaks. The nappy can be waterproof or have a waterproof layer to further prevent leaks.

A good nappy should also fit snugly around the baby’s hips and thighs. A nappy that does not fit properly will allow leaks. A nappy with Velcro-closure is great to adjust the fit to each baby. Adjustable nappies can grow with the baby, adding to their appeal, and because they are designed for this, they can also be adjusted to fit more snugly over different body types.

Another concern of parents when looking at reusable nappies is how long the nappies will last. A good nappy must be made from materials that will survive constant washing over a few years. The actual construction of the nappy is important. A nappy should not start to come apart quickly with heavy use. It should be able to withstand machine washing. A durable nappy should, theoretically, be usable for more than one baby.

Finally, a good nappy must be convenient to use. It should be easy to learn to put on and remove the nappy. A parent does not want to be struggling during a nappy change to get the baby in and out of the nappy. Velcro closures and snaps on most nappy covers make a nappy change easy for parents.

There are many types of nappy and nappy systems available and no one type or system is the best. Each family has to decide what works for them by figuring out their needs and trying out the different types of nappies available.
